CARRIAGE TESTIMONIALS 2019/20

Cara and Brad- August

“The Carriage absolutely exceeded all of our expectations and was just the most perfect getaway! We could not believe that a place as beautiful, peaceful and unique was only an hour and a bit from London. Tim really is such a great host – he was so welcoming and friendly and gave us the full lowdown on how everything worked in the carriage when we got there so made us feel right at home! There was home-baked sourdough (delicious!) and all the goods for a full English breakfast which was just divine. The place doesn’t have any electricity but it didn’t feel like you were missing anything – the woodfire heating system is super user-friendly and my boyfriend was in his element working the setup. The place caters for all of your needs – it was so romantic and special and our highlights included chilling by the dam, rowing around in the boat/canoe, relaxing outside, plenty of ‘braais’, G&T’s in the sun, hot bath under the stars, lunch at the Griffin overlooking the ‘Sussex Serengeti’, walks in nearby forests and most of all having the most incredible space all to ourselves! We will 100% be back again – the place is extraordinary! Thanks Tim for giving us a slice of your heaven on earth! 🙂 “

Staying at the Streatfield Train Carriage was hands down one of the best trips I have ever done. Could have stayed a month. Ate well, slept well and left feeling so much more relaxed in the space of just a few days than I did when we arrived. Tim, our host, has thought of everything. From the supplies for our breakfast, to the fresh sourdough, to somehow wrangling us a table at an otherwise fully booked pub! This place will definitely become someplace special to me and I’ll absolutely be back time and time again. I already miss the morning coffee, swim, yoga, breakfast and sunshine routine!

Thank you so much Tim, Sophie and the Streatfield Railway Carriage for the most welcome break ever! This place is 100% magic – it has been crafted with total love, style and care – with every detail thought of in the most seemingly effortless and cool way – we felt very lucky to discover such a gem in unbelievably beautiful surroundings and we can’t wait to return (neither can our dog, Twiglet, who very much enjoyed her serene morning swims). There’s nowhere we’d rather drink tasty wine and eat woodfire pizza under the stars = pure heaven. Lauren and Courtney

What an amazing place. It’s difficult to know where to start: wonderful host, beautiful carriage, perfect swimming lake, plenty of shady hammock spots in the trees. We felt a bit like we were on an unspoilt Greek island or a Goan beach. Favourite moments: spotting a deer from bed in the morning, sunsets over the lake, the pizza oven, nighttime outdoor baths by lamplight with a backdrop of owls hooting, the list goes on. Thank you Tim.

Sarah and Rory – July

We can’t speak highly enough of our stay at the magical Streatfield Train Carriage! Tim was a great host, gave us a detailed tour of the carriage, booked us a table at The Griffin (a must visit for incredible food & atmosphere) and even greeted us with a freshly baked loaf of sourdough. The carriage itself is nestled in a pocket of land which can only be described as something out of an Enid Blighton book – idyllic, peaceful and full of life – a slice of paradise! The interior of the carriage was completely charming with all it’s quirks and has everything you need and more. We spent our days swimming in the lake, rowing the boat, enjoying the outdoor tin bath, cooking pizza’s on the stone baked stove (which Tim kindly gave us a tutorial of) and roasting smores over the campfire. Thanks for all the memories, we can’t wait to come back again soon!

Aleema & Tim – July 2020

You can’t find a better place for pure rest and relaxation. Having a private and clean swimming pond all to ourselves was just bliss – nothing beats pre-breakfast swims (except maybe after-dinner ones when a deer stands there watching you!). We spent hours in front of the campfire with a good book and a glass of wine, went for long walks and cycle rides in the woods around the property, and dabbled in pizza-making in the wood-fired oven. Even the one rainy evening we had was great – we were tucked up in front of the wood-burning stove inside the cozy yet luxurious train carriage that was our home for the week. Tim’s welcome breakfast is second to none, and all the stock of jams, sauces and spices were much-appreciated. The perfect place for a much-needed digital detox!

Debbie and Rachel – July 2020

Struggling to find the words for how perfect this place is. It is the greatest “escape the city” break you can imagine, and having a private lake/meadow/woodland was the most unbelievable treat. Incredibly beautiful and well kitted our carriage, and great to be surrounded by nature but with all the comfort and little touches to make it a truly special place. Lake swims before breakfast and woodfired pizza under the stars were highlights, though it is tricky to choose as all so brilliant.Tim couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful, and his top quality breakfast pack was the icing on the cake. We can only hope the secret won’t get out too far and wide so we can book in again soon!

If you want to get away with someone special, I could not recommend this remarkable 19th century train carriage conversion more! For our 3-day trip we ventured to the Ashdown Forest on what can only be described as a biblically wet time of the year. Some surrounding roads had even been closed, and wellington boots were a total necessity. Given this, you’d expect a stay in an over 200-year old train carriage off the beaten track to be a damp, cold and miserable affair. The total opposite was true!

Firstly, Tim the owner of the carriage kindly came to fetch us from the train station, a short drive away from our stay. He is an absolute gentleman and incredibly eager to make you feel welcome and get the most out of your stay. En route to your place he will point out all the local restaurants and country pubs worth visiting (and those worth avoiding), albeit you’ll find it a struggle to leave the quirky comforts of your train carriage. He is incredibly accommodating to whatever it is you wish to do during your stay, if you desire to go on a forest walk for example, he’s the man to advise you accordingly. Tim can also arrange for food to be in your fridge when you arrive, subject to any of your dietary requirements.

There is no electricity, and this is something quite special. I absolutely loved using the old icebox refrigerator, which kept everything cold for the duration of our stay. Moreover, Tim stocked it with excellent local produce, and ultimately, we didn’t have to venture to the shops for anything. The carriage remains particularly warm and cosy with the wood burner and all the lanterns going. I won’t forget the light that all this emits at night-time, as it’s something truly magical. There is an antique metal bathtub outside as well as an outdoor shower, which both require a fire to heat the water. This is all straightforward subsequent to Tim’s quick crash-course upon arrival. A hot bath outside next to a roaring fire in winter was certainly a highlight for us. Additionally, there is a wood-fired pizza oven which we used to cook some amazing meals. At one point I think I had six fires going, all to my girlfriend’s amusement while she had her feet up!

There is an incredibly pleasant lake next to the carriage with a jetty – however, we couldn’t fathom a swim during winter! We did however make good use of the rowboat to get a better look at some of the largest carp I’ve ever seen. You truly get to breathe some fresh air here, and if you don’t head out into the nearby town, it can feel as if nobody else exists.

Most importantly you should note that this is not a commercial exploit, this is Tim’s project that he built from the ground up for his family (ask him how he got the carriage to the site for an interesting story!) As a result, it’s apparent that it’s been built with love and you’ll notice this in all the small detail everywhere. I can only consider us lucky for having been granted the opportunity to enjoy such an extraordinary space. This was our first stay at the train carriage, but it hopefully won’t be our last!
